Sort order. Light in the Gloaming was a promising, though sometimes uneven, beginning to a saga as well as the beginning of the hopefully extensive body of work of J. Breaking the Gloaming is a fulfillment of the promise of book 1. With a foreign threat on the horizon, plotters and schemers from the last story go into places way outside their element this time around, and lose control along the way.

The world of Valemidas is much more dangerous now, and intriguing as well. The philosophical musin Light in the Gloaming was a promising, though sometimes uneven, beginning to a saga as well as the beginning of the hopefully extensive body of work of J. The philosophical musings have been toned down a bit. The philosophy that drove much of the action in Light in the Gloaming has not gone away, but has gone below the surface a bit.

The action, suspense, and characterization, however, have all been greatly increased and greatly improved. This one became hard to put down. The Gloaming series has never contained only one protagonist. While the noble prince, Andor, was mostly painted at the primary protagonist, he always shared equal spotlight with his betrayer, Tryst.

Both the perspectives of Andor and Tryst are written 1st person. The lines between good and evil were clear in book one, with Andor as the noble prince on the quest to reclaim his legitimate place on the throne and save his people.

Tryst was the clear antagonist who wanted nothing other than to keep and expand his power, the well being of others be damned. In Breaking the Gloaming, however, both characters become more three dimensional. Tryst evolves from the tyrannical, mustache twirling villain into the most heart wrenching and complicated character in the whole series.
