Time is probably the most incomprehensible, mysterious, destructive and illusory phenomenon in the world. The Ancient Sage. Time is the substance I am made of. Time is a river which sweeps me along, but I am the river; it is a tiger which destroys me, but I am the tiger; it is a fire which consumes me, but I am the fire. Jorge Luis Borges. Both in thought and in feeling, even though time be real, to realise the unimportance of time is the gate of wisdom.

Bertrand Russell. What you perceive as precious is not time but the one point that is out of time: the Now. That is precious indeed. The more you are focused on time—past and future—the more you miss the Now, the most precious thing there is. Eckhart Tolle. To save time, stop looking for shortcuts. Nobody works out the value of time: men use it lavishly as if it cost nothing… We have to be more careful in preserving what will cease at an unknown point.

The moment is not properly an atom of time but an atom of eternity. It is the first reflection of eternity in time, its first attempt, as it were, at stopping time. Time — particularly our experience of it as a continuity of successive moments — is a cognitive illusion rather than an inherent feature of the universe, a construction of human consciousness and perhaps the very hallmark of human consciousness. My past is everything I failed to be. Fernando Pessoa Click to tweet. We may be born alone, but childhood ends with a synchrony of clocks, as we lend ourselves fully to the contagion of time.

Alan Burdick. Timelessness — in the sense of time never ending, never beginning — is a stagnant nothing. Thomas Mann. Time is a brisk wind, for each hour it brings something new… but who can understand and measure its sharp breath, its mystery and its design? Is there anything we know more intimately than the fleetingness of time, the transience of each and every moment?

Rebecca Goldstein. Time is a dictator, as we know it. Where does it go? What does it do? Most of all, is it alive?

How feeling shorter than those around us can trigger paranoid thoughts

Is it a thing that we cannot touch and is it alive? Franz Kafka. Time is a feature of creation, and the creator remains apart from it, transcendent over it. The finest workers in stone are not copper or steel tools, but the gentle touches of air and water working at their leisure with a liberal allowance of time. Henry David Thoreau. Patience and time do more than strength or passion. Jean de La Fontaine Click to tweet. Do everything you were going to do, but with less angst, less suffering, less emotion. Everything takes time. Harvey Mackay. People are frugal in guarding their personal property; but as soon as it comes to squandering time they are most wasteful of the one thing in which it is right to be stingy.

Let the refining and improving of your own life keep you so busy that you have little time to criticize others. The best thing about time passing is the privilege of running out of it, of watching the wave of mortality break over me and everyone I know.. Sarah Manguso. To man, time is given like a piece of land, as it were, entrusted to him for faithful tilling; a space in which to strive incessantly, achieve self-realization, move onward and upward. Time is the cruelest teacher; first she gives the test, then teaches the lesson.

Leonard Bernstein. We will never have total control over this extraordinary dimension. Time will warp and confuse and baffle and entertain however much we learn about its capacities. Time is not only at the heart of the way we organize life, but the way we experience it. The more we learn , the more we can shape it to our will and destiny. We can slow it down or speed it up. We can hold on to the past more securely and predict the future more accurately. Presence means becoming aware of a physical and psychic self that is temporally extended. To be self-conscious is to recognize oneself as something that persists through time and is embodied.

Marc Wittmann. The importance of time is rather practical than theoretical, rather in relation to our desires than in relation to truth. Time flows in the same way for all human beings; every human being flows through time in a different way. Yasunari Kawabata. The key is in not spending time, but in investing it.

Perhaps all anxiety might derive from a fixation on moments — an inability to accept life as ongoing. Time passes, and little by little everything that we have spoken in falsehood becomes true. Marcel Proust. Reality is a question of perspective; the further you get from the past, the more concrete and plausible it seems — but as you approach the present, it inevitably seems incredible.

We waste time looking for the perfect lover, instead of creating the perfect love.

Tom Robbins Click to tweet. The most fucked up joke life can play on you is letting you meet the right person at the wrong time. No relationship is a waste of time. The wrong ones teach you the lessons that prepare you for the right one. Love seems the swiftest, but it is the slowest of all growths. No man or woman really knows what perfect love is until they have been married a quarter of a century.

Mark Twain. Leo Christopher. The fact is, one grows out of people, and the only thing is to face it. Somerset Maugham. Time is your most precious gift because you only have a set amount of it. Sissy Gavrilaki. Love is a promise, love is a souvenir, once given never forgotten, never let it disappear. John Lennon. Muddy water is best cleared by leaving it alone. Alan Watts Click to tweet. Alone time is the best time. I live in that solitude which is painful in youth, but delicious in the years of maturity. Sometimes you need to step outside, get some air, and remind yourself of who you are and where you want to be.

And sometimes, you have to venture outside your world in order to find yourself. Gossip Girl. Believe me, it is the sign of a great man, and one who is above human error, not to allow his time to be frittered away: he has the longest possible life simply because whatever time was available he devoted entirely to himself. You get to decide where your time goes. You can either spend it moving forward, or you can spend it putting out fires. You decide. Tony Morgan. When was the last time you spent a quiet moment just doing nothing — just sitting and looking at the sea, or watching the wind blowing the tree limbs, or waves rippling on a pond, a flickering candle or children playing in the park?

Would You Date a Short Guy ?

A slippery succession of long hours adding up to ever-shorter days and years that disappear like falling dominoes? Dani Shapiro. Enjoy every moment you have. Because in life, there are no rewinds, only flashbacks. Anmol Andore. The self and time prove to be especially present in boredom. They go missing in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, which results from the acceleration of social processes. Through mindfulness and emotional control, the tempo of life that we experience can be reduced, and we can regain time for ourselves and others.

Distracted by the obligations of everyday activities, we are no longer aware of ourselves… Everything is done all at once, faster and faster, yet no personal balance or meaning can be found. Greater variety makes a given period of life expand in retrospect. Life passes more slowly. Begin doing what you want to do now.

We are not living in eternity. The lack of understanding or denial is more mentally at least I would say damaging than this heightened vigilence. I wasted a lot of time trying to get people immediate family to understand. There's a lot of myths about shorter men but it's just an outcome of their environment and the vessel their mind is in In the article, we have average height folks experiencing what it is like to be short. They feel like a child, or vulnerable. These are the perceptions of "average height" people suddenly made shorter; not short people.

These average height people bring these same perceptions with them out in the world all the time, and it influences how they treat people that are shorter. That short people do not "achieve" as much due to their own perceptions of height. Placing the cause of this lack of achievement squarely on the heads of shorter people by saying they "feel inferior to taller people". The angle not covered is that all humans have this internal bias unless they are very aware and evolved people , and it drives how they treat others who are shorter.

And that treatment is not good. It isn't that short people feel inferior, and therefore achieve less, it is that they are systematically bullied and overlooked. As children, they are often chosen last for teams and groups.

The Journey from Fear to Love Is Shorter Than You Think : Susan Dora Goudy :

They are bullied. They are left out. They are called on less in school. Their opportunities are made fewer by taller people. Taller people are chosen for jobs. Taller people are "listened to" more, in groups. Taller people are literally "given" more opportunities. They are more likely to be believed in situations of conflict. They will also have the lion's share of supporters in any debate. All based on height. It isn't a short persons "perception" that they can't get ahead - they are not allowed to get ahead. When short people behave in a way that a tall person would, they are perceived negatively.

If they have a talent or ability that is greater than most people, they will have many, many more people in their field viewing them in a hostile manner. If short people do get ahead, they are more likely to have it taken away due to the perception that they are less deserving. The vast majority of these perceptions are so insidious and completely acceptable in our culture that most people don't even recognise them in others, much less themselves.

But it is more pervasive sex discrimination, mostly because it isn't addressed as existing as a problem. Short people are not paranoid because of their own internal perceptions - people really are out to derail them. Are some people more likely to endorse these beliefs than others? Has the technology in search of a purpose finally found one in mental health?

Part 2. Time Quotes That Are…

Bring it on! Well this was impeccable timing! I thought I would distract myself from the fear of moving forward with my business project…so I decided to read your blog lol Are you listening in on my thoughts Jeff? Great post. Thanks Jeff! This is just what I needed to hear today. I have been procrastinating starting my website and writing. I am asking The Lord to help me push forward. An excellent post — very motivation and uplifting. I am also terrified of public speaking. Best wishes. I needed this post to remind me that I may always be afraid to speak up in class — but I can courageously choose to do it anyway.

Fear comes the unknown spun by over-active mind. I love this post so much! On the other side of fear are my dreams. I am going to share it with others on my blog tomorrow. I need to hear this on a regular basis. This post truly had a monumental impact on me. I sincerely appreciate the time you took to write this, and the care and generosity you demonstrated in sharing this.

This is a call-to-action that was tough to hear, but necessary to read. I think this was the hard push I really needed. Hey Jeff. Thx for the post. I think sometimes fear is silence.

Melanie Tonia Evans

But we have to overcome and instead of the fear silencing us we need to silence the fear. Does that make sense? Thx Jeff. I needed this tonight. Blessings to you. Spot on Jeff. I fear everything. Slowly but surely, it just may work. I think it was you that presented an idea a while back; we owe it to the world to create, to be the best possible person that we can be.

We need to bring these thoughts and ideas to the rest of the world. As writers and influencers we can not give in to fear. We can not let the creativity killer win this battle. Hit the nail right on the head Jeff! What an encouragement to a reluctant writer and leader like me. Thanks for pushing me to face my fear and do what God wants me to do! I fear being neglected.. I want to be a high profile character in the socielty.

This is inspiring. It is irrational most of the time. Thank you for your encouragement, Jeff!

Journey from Fear to Love Is Shorter Than You Think

One thing that always makes me afraid is my ability to write a story in English. English is my 4th language and I know that have been making thousands of grammatical mistakes and mispellings on my blog posts. But I still wanna learn. Helen, just by reading your comment here I would have never guessed that English is your 4th language! I think you are probably doing much better than you think! I have my husband to help me editing and proof-reading before I posted something. An excellent post, Jeff!

Thanks for encouraging me to get over my fear and write every day this month! The results have been so fulfilling! The exercise in persistence is proving to myself that I can accomplish what I set my mind to. Jeff I had a fear of telling my family and friends about wanting to write stories and create picture books……THEN I took your course, even my beautiful 79 year old mother who I read my blog posts too……. You have learned so much in one year. Like you say I now no longer think what if? I just know I have to work hard and one day this year I will have something amazing to share. Thank you.

Thanks, Jeff, great post. I absolutely agree with you. Fear is one of the greatest obstacles when pursuing our dreams and aspirations, but the more often we manage to overcome it, the easier it gets in time. Unfortunately, we tend to give up too easily on our goals when the going gets tough and fear kicks in. Sometimes the perfect moment to pull through is when you feel the most resistance. I totally agree, Marcy. Love your thoughts here. Fear to me is the Resistance, and the only way to defeat both is by doing the work, showing up, taking action.

Thanks for the great post, Jeff. I found a scrap of paper at the back of a cupboard yesterday with this poem from Nicola Slee on it. Feels like it echoes your message. Be prepared to leap. The road is not long but the way is deep. And you must not only walk there, you must be prepared to leap. I feel like this post was written for me. I think fear comes from the 1 thing that went wrong irrespective of the things that went right..

Your post speaks volumes and is like a wake up call.. This was very helpful!! Its so odd to fear something I love so much. I wind up focusing on reading about writing and blogging and avoiding my manuscript. Thanks for getting me back in the game, Jeff! Cara from raleigh, NC. This is exactly what our whole family me, my husband, 22year old son, 21 year old soon to be son-in-law, 18 year old almost married daughter, and 16 year old daughter.

Are walking out of: fear. We have just recently left a church that we had faithfully served in for over 30 years. God has called us to be pastors outside of the four walls and to help connect churches together with the one goal of healing the broken and lost. This has caused ALL of us to face our fears while listening to the still small voice inside, opposed to the traditions of familiarity. Thanks for encouraging so many on your blog to live and not just survive! I am afraid of the personal contact necessary to move forward.

I love public speaking but I have to communicate with people who will let me do that. Thanks for the push, Jeff! I love the one column style you have on this site. It puts the focus where it should be: the words! This is the fear that for me is the most paralyzing… and tiring.
